Captain Rudi Greenwood is a lonely man trapped in a purposeless job, in a land where alcohol is the currency and rules are frequently ignored in pursuit of wealth. Rudi is contemplating ending his boring life.

Bethany Edwards is a grieving widow expecting her late husband's child. However, her interactions with the handsome but moody soldier are like a butterfly unfurling its wings. She seeks Rudi's help and support, but is that all she truly wants?
Rudi's attraction to the lovely widow compels him to reassess his views and contemplate someone new.
When Governor Lachlan Macquarie asks Rudi for help improving the roads, a casual remark alters Rudi's life and benefits the entire colony. To tackle the alcohol issue, he proposes creating a new currency.
